Clarinettiste principal de l’Orchestre Philharmonia depuis 2000 et du London Sinfonietta depuis 2002, Mark van de Wiel, soliste renommé, s’est produit dans les plus grandes salles du monde entier. Il a joué comme soliste avec le Philharmonia Orchestra sous la direction d’Ashkenazy, Gardner, Järvi et Wilson, avec le London Sinfonietta avec Atherson, Brabbins, Knussen et Masson, ainsi qu’avec le London Chamber Orchestra. Au sein de cet orchestre, il est également premier clarinettiste sous la direction de Warren-Green, avec lequel il a eu l’occasion de se produire en solo à la Scala de Milan. Remarqué pour son talent dans ses interprétations de musique contemporaine, Mark donna la première mondiale du Concerto pour clarinette de Joseph Phibbs (2017) avec le Philharmonia au Malmö Live Konserthus, et du Concerto Hysteresis de Van Der Aa en 2014, missionné par le London Sinfonietta. Il a donné de nombreuses premières à Londres dans la série « Musiques actuelles » du Philharmonia. En outre, il est également à l’origine de la première espagnole du Concerto de Carter, les premières du Quintet pour clarinettes de Carter et du Cantus Mystics de Taverner au Royaume-Uni, et la première du Fitkin’s Agnostic de Graham à Londres. Il a joué les Domaines de Boulez au festival Proms en 2015, et la Sequenza de Berio à l’Opéra de Sydney.
As principal clarinet of the Philharmonia Orchestra (since 2000), the London Sinfonietta (since 2002) and as a well-known soloist, Mark van de Wiel performs at major venues throughout the world. He has appeared as a soloist with the Philharmonia (Ashkenazy, Gardner, Järvi, Wilson), the London Sinfonietta (Atherton, Brabbins, Knussen, Masson), and the London Chamber Orchestra, where he is also principal clarinet (Warren-Green, including a solo appearance at La Scala, Milan). Noted for performances of contemporary music, Mark gave the world premiere of the clarinet concerto by Joseph Phibbs (2017) which he jointly commissioned with the Philharmonia and Malmö Live Konserthus, and the world premiere of the Van Der Aa concerto Hysteresis (2014), commissioned for him by the London Sinfonietta. He has given several London premieres in the Philharmonia’s Music of Today series, and elsewhere the Spanish premiere of the Carter Concerto, the UK premieres of the Carter Clarinet Quintet and of Taverner’s Cantus Mysticus (at the Proms), and the London première of Graham Fitkin’s Agnostic. He played Boulez’s Domaines at the 2015 Proms, and the Berio Sequenza in the Sydney Opera House.
Mark est le clarinettiste de l’orchestre de chambre Endymion depuis sa création en 1980. D’autres enregistrements récents incluent le Concerto de Nielsen avec le Philharmonia et Paavo Järvi. Né à Northampton, Mark a reçu sa formation musicale au Merton College d’Oxford et au Royal College of Music. Il a été nommé clarinettiste principal de l’Opéra national gallois, ainsi que de l’Opéra Glyndebourne en tournée. Depuis plusieurs années, il est le clarinettiste et cor de basset soliste dans La Clémence de Titus de Mozart à l’Opéra d’Etat de Bavière. Mark est membre honoraire de l’Académie royale de musique où il enseigne, et est docteur honoris causa de l’Université de Northampton. Il est professeur de clarinette pour les festivals I, Culture Orchestra et le Festival de musique des îles britanniques. Enseignant engagé, il donne des masterclass dans le monde entier.
Mark has been the clarinettist with Endymion since its formation in 1980. Other chamber music collaborators have included Vladimir Ashkenazy, Elizabeth Leonskaja, Geoffrey Parsons, Pascal Rogé, Kate Royal, the Quarteto Camargo Guarneri of São Paolo, the Dante Quartet, and the Brodsky Quartet, with whom he gave the London premiere of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’s Hymn to Artemis Locheia. With Zsolt-Tihamér Visontay and Yefim Bronfman he gave several performances of Bartok’s Contrasts in the Philharmonia’s series Infernal Dance, also released on CD. Other recent recordings include the Nielsen Concerto with the Philharmonia and Paavo Järvi. Born in Northampton and educated at Merton College, Oxford, and the Royal College of Music, Mark was appointed principal clarinettist with Welsh National Opera and subsequently with Glyndebourne Touring Opera. For several years he was the clarinet and basset horn soloist in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito at the Bayerisches Staatsoper. Mark is an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music, where he is a Professor, and has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Northampton University. He is the clarinet professor for the I, Culture Orchestra, and for the British Isles Music Festival. Mark is a committed teacher, and gives masterclasses worldwide.
